Quick Apply Part-time 3 hours ago Full Job Description Job description Job title Gross Room Assistant, Anatomic Pathology Reports to Laboratory Supervisor, Evening Shift Job purpose This position is responsible for helping in all areas of the lab including but not limited to receiving specimens from the couriers and documenting number of specimens and time received, distributing specimens to appropriate areas in the lab, opening specimen bags and preparing jars on tray for accessioner, labeling specimen jars/requisitions with labels, making cassettes and scanning necessary paperwork.
Duties and responsibilities Document accurately specimen receipt via Courier log program Prioritize specimen processing based on established guidelines set by the supervisor Accessions specimens into the Laboratory Information System (LIS) Verify that specimen containers and requisition labeling match and are labeled accurately prior to examination Participates in the laboratory occurrence management program.
o Verifies specimen and requisition meet acceptable criteria based on guidelines set by the supervisor o Documents any deficiencies and tries resolve discrepancies prior to gross examination and escalate to supervisor when necessary via quality control flag in the LIS system Performs block reconciliation for all blocks received for processing Collate paperwork, specimens, and tissue cassettes as well as documenting specimen receipt and reconcile specimen logs with appropriate follow-up as necessary Maintains files by scanning all paperwork into the computer system to ensure information is current and ready for QM review Maintains specimen storage areas and discards specimens per guidelines set by the specimen retention policy Maintain a clean and safe work environment to ensure efficient workflow and compliance with all regulatory requirements May be required to properly handle and dispose hazardous materials Performs cytology fluid preparations and staining.
Foster department and laboratory teamwork through effective communication Perform other duties assigned by the supervisor Uses personal protective equipment (PPE) in the laboratory due to exposure to biohazardous and/or chemically hazardous materials.
Answer routine inquiries related to specimen handling and case status Qualifications High School diploma or equivalent.
Familiar with medical terminology.
Basic computer literacy.
Work well in a fast paced environment with established time constraints.
Work with/handle sharp instruments, hazardous chemical substances and biological (biohazard) material.
Use of keyboard extensively is required, dependent upon shift assignment.
Prolonged standing, lifting, bending, and telephone use.
Some instrumentation and work counters are higher than table height.
Working conditions This requires working evening shift hours that may vary from 4-6 hours a night, depending on the workload.
The workload must be completed in order to be done with the shift.
There maybe an occasional weekend workload, but only on very rare occasions.
Physical requirements Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance.
For lifts over 35 pounds, lifting equipment is expected to be used or lift with at least one other associate when available.
Unique lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case by case basis.
